University of Otago School of Business

Master of Entrepreneurship

The Master of Entrepreneurship is a 15 month programme designed to support those with an entrepreneurial spirit who want to start an innovative new venture and who aspire to the entrepreneurial lifestyle. The Master of Entrepreneurship is based upon the premise that the knowledge and skills needed to survive and thrive in business can be taught while the attitudes required of entrepreneurs can be identified and encouraged.

The programme is taught in intensive 3-day modules (plus required course and project work) with one module completed every six weeks. While the programme is ideally suited to people who have their own new venture idea and wish to use the programme to launch it upon the path to commercialisation, it is also well suited to people with an entrepreneurial spirit who are searching for a new venture opportunity, and also those who work alongside or advise entrepreneurs. Assessment and course work can be based around the individual participant's new venture idea or around a pre-prepared case study. As participants are only required to attend classes for three days every six weeks, participants can base themselves outside of Dunedin and devote considerable time to developing their new venture or investigating new venture opportunities.

Applicants seeking admission to the programme would normally be expected to have a Bachelors degree (in any discipline) with a B/B+ grade average, however, considerable emphasis is placed on evidence of the "entrepreneurial talent" possessed by applicants, thus previous university results is not the only factor determining admission. The programme does not assume participants have prior knowledge of any particular business discipline thus it suited to entrepreneurs from the Arts, Sciences and Professions as well as Commerce.
