ACCT 310 - Issues in Financial Reporting

(second semester) 0.15EFTS 18 points

This course explores the function and regulation of financial reporting in society, from the perspectives of both users and preparers of external reports. The respective components of the course are the analysis and interpretation of corporate financial statements using appropriate technology, and an examination of the problems associated with the provision of financial information.

Prerequisites: ACCT 211, ACCT 213 & 18 further 200-level ACCT points

Lecture: Two 2-hour lecture per week
Seminar/Workshop: One 2-hour seminar or workshop per week


Objectives
The course has been designed to develop an understanding of:
• the analysis of information provided in corporate financial statements and the uses of such information in various decision situations.
• the strengths and weaknesses of ratio analysis and its underlying statistical assumptions.
• Cross-sectional and time series analysis.
• the role of spreadsheets, statistical packages, internet and databases in financial analysis.
• the impact of accounting information on the share market.
• the process of accounting policy formulation by both companies and standards-setting bodies, - the problems associated with the measurement and reporting of capital and income.
• ethical dilemmas in financial statement preparation and reporting.
• other currently debated financial accounting issues.

The course also aims to improve written and verbal communication and presentation skills, computer skills, the ability to undertake teamwork, and the ability to research accounting issues. The course aims to promote a self-learning approach.
