International Economics
Introduction
In a small open economy like New Zealand, an understanding of how
international markets work (both goods markets and financial markets)
and an appreciation of the role played in our own economic lives
by the international economy is crucial to national well-being.
New Zealand economists have traditionally been very strong in the
area of international economics (perhaps because of this recognition
of its great practical significance) and this tradition holds as
much at Otago as elsewhere. Currently there are three faculty members
whose central research interests are in International economics
but the pervasiveness of the discipline is evidenced by the fact
that at least three others are active in areas where international
economics is important.
The Department has active research interests in both the real side
of international trade and the financial side (Alan
King) and the research covers not only pure theory but empirical
work as well as policy studies.
Current research programmes include studies of the evolution of
New Zealand trade policy; the political economy of NZ trade policy;
the econometric modelling of the determinants of exports; and the
interaction of trade and competition policies. The debate over NZ
trade policy under the economic reforms of the last decade and a
half, for example, has stirred considerable international interest
and the work of Otago researchers in this field is widely cited.
The issue of trade and competition policy, by way of another example,
is increasingly the focus of debate in the OECD and WTO (World Trade
Organisation) on the future direction of international trade agreements.
