Research
In 2006 the Department’s research output was assessed as
part of the Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF). The PBRF assigns
a score to academic units/subject areas based on a combination of
measures: quality evaluation of individual research outputs by external
peer-review panels; research degree completions for each subject
area/academic unit; and the external research income earned by each
degree-granting provider. The Department’s score of 6.1 makes
it the best economics department in New Zealand. The University
of Otago’s overall score is 4.22.
The research interests of staff cover the fields of economic growth
and development, international economics, economics of sport, health
economics, labour economics, monetary economics, public economics,
productivity analysis, business economics, industrial organization
and commercial policy.
