ECON 251 Special Topic:
Economics of Sport
18 points. Not offered in 2009.
Overview
This paper explores selected aspects of the economics
of the sports industry. We will seek answers to the following kinds
of questions: what factors determine team profitability and how
do these factors affect owners' decision making? What is the optimal
design of a sports league? Is competitive balance important to a
league's success? Why are most new (and proposed) professional sports
stadiums havily subsidised by governments and taxpayers? What determines
the salaries of professional athletes? How is this affected by market
structure and what are the implications for team profitability in
different kinds of markets? Note that this is first and foremost
an economics course, not designed for the casual sports fan.
