Overview

This paper seeks to enable students to acquire sufficient knowledge and understanding of the high-performing economies of Asia (Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand). Issues to be discussed include impact of government policy on economic performance; markets, competition and economic efficiency; costs of economic growth in East Asia; causes and impact of the 1997-1998 regional economic crisis; prospects for recovery, lessons learned and relationships with the world economy. The course is largely of an applied nature, building on the theoretical material covered in first year economics.
