ECON 208 Asian Economic
Development

Overview
This paper seeks to enable students to acquire sufficient knowledge
and understanding of the high-performing economies of Asia (Japan,
Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and
Thailand). Issues to be discussed include impact of government policy
on economic performance; markets, competition and economic efficiency;
costs of economic growth in East Asia; causes and impact of the
1997-1998 regional economic crisis; prospects for recovery, lessons
learned and relationships with the world economy. The course is
largely of an applied nature, building on the theoretical material
covered in first year economics.
